Burj Khalifa Construction: Samsung Constructed the World's Tallest Building in Dubai

Do you know when the Burj Khalifa construction got started? Who is the architect behind this famous 2722-foot-tall tower? In January 2004 the construction of Burj Khalifa began with a five-year plan period.

The brain behind the beautiful architecture is Adrian Smith, who included Islamic architecture in the construction. Moreover, if you are unaware, the Burj Khalifa design is similar to Tower Palace III in Seoul, South Korea.

Smith and his team also designed it. Furthermore, the organization behind the Burj Khalifa construction was Samsung C&T. The South Korean-based company is already famous for its constructed innovated buildings including Taipei 101 and PETRONAS Twin Tower.

Explain the Design of Burj Khalifa Construction

If you look at the floor plan of Burj Khalifa construction it is designed in a Y-shaped floor geometry. It was the same as Tower Palace III based on 73 floors. Originally the palace was designed as a 93-floor building but due to some restrictions, it had to be cut down to 73 floors.

“I brought it down to a point where they still stepped but only in two-story or three-story increments, So it was almost like building a top to the building.”

A representative from Emaar was looking for architects who would help them design the tallest building in Dubai. Later Emaar gathered a few top architects and revealed to them that they wanted a 1640 to 1968-foot tall range building. Every firm puts in its best designs.

Later Adrian Smith and his company got a call as their design was accepted.

“The initial drawings, which weren’t much, suited their needs, They selected us and we then started in earnest about a month later.”

After winning the contract Smith and his team decided to pursue an Islamic perspective architectural design. Take a look at his statement.

“As I was developing the massing, I thought about the architectural elements that exist in the Middle East, not just Dubai, that people are familiar with, So I thought, ‘I’m gonna use that, and I want to use it in an abstracted way where it’s not obvious,”

Burj Khalifa is known as the iconic tower of Dubai. People from around the world come to Dubai to visit and look at the iconic tower.

What is the Height of Burj Khalifa?

The total height of Burj Khalifa is 2,722 feet. It includes the height of the antenna. However, after winning the project there was something that felt missing to Smith. He didn’t feel that the tower was giving that look that he created in his mind.

“So I thought, ‘I’m gonna use that, and I want to use it in an abstracted way where it’s not obvious,”

Smith and his team flew to Dubai and demonstrated the Burj Khalifa construction through a model. They aimed to take the height of the building to 2790 feet. However, the investors were a bit conscious due to pricing. But looking at the interest of people they decided to go with the plan.

“We modeled them as a tower where I could take the top off and put another top on, We made the decision right there,”

The Skyscraper is the tallest building in the world right now. If you still thinking that the Eiffel Tower would be at its comparison. No! Not at all. Adding another Eiffel tower on the top of the existing tower still did not match the height of Burj Khalifa.

How Much is the Cost of Burj Khalifa?

Burj Khalifa construction costs were around $1.5 billion. However, this is not very expensive. No doubt it’s the tallest building in the world but this is not expensive. Moreover, the most expensive building is Rawabi Abraj Al-Bait which costs around $15 billion.

What is Inside the World’s Tallest Building?

As per the design Burj Khalifa was constructed as a residential building. However, the perspective changed after it was established. The architect Adrian Smith revealed why they shifted to a mixed-structure building.

“Most of these supertall buildings really need to be mixed-use because the taller they are, typically the larger they need to be at the base,”

“So you’re building maybe two million, three million square feet of space, and if it’s just one use it takes time to fill it, and the carrying costs become excessive while you’re trying to rent out the building.”

Now the building is divided into three sectors: Residential, Commercial, and Hospitality. There are more than 900 residencies that offer 1, 2, 3, and 4-bedroom apartments. Moreover, residents have access to indoor and outdoor activities. Like the pool, jacuzzi, library, cigar lounge, and club.

“On the amenity floors we have the pool that actually goes inside and outside, It goes underneath the exterior wall, so you can actually swim under the wall and go outside.”
